Obasan – Joy Kogawa

Joy Kogawa’s Obasan was the second novel I read in ENGL 313. I really enjoyed this novel as it told the story of Japanese-Canadians during the Second World War. This is not a topic that I have covered much in past history classes so it was great that this class allowed us to read a novel about this time in history with details taken from Kogawa’s own experiences. In our discussions this was how a large portion of the class felt. Kogawa has other novels that focus on characters from this novel and I plan to look into reading them as well because I enjoyed Obasan so much.
